2008 Outdoor Tournaments
Warriors go undefeated to win Gold at the 2008 Canada Day Weekend St. Albert Boys Tournament! The Warriors U-16 Tier II Boys Team coached by Larry Olatonade put in a stellar team performance throughout the Canada Day long weekend as participants of the 2008 Annual St. Albert Boys Tournament. Playing in a round robin format and enduring sizzling temperatures upwards of 31 degrees, they set the tone early with a 2-1 victory over the lads from the Edmonton Scottish Society in their first tilt. The team got off to a quick start in the opening half with Aundrey Webster notching the Warriors first goal of the tournament. Their continued hard work eventually paid off with Shina Olatonade putting the proverbial “nail in the coffin” by striking the winning goal with only 2 minutes remaining on the clock. In their second outing the following day against what would prove to be a tough Red Deer Renegades squad, the Warrior boys came away with a convincing 3-0 victory with timely goals from snipers Steven Ferreira, Arjun Dhimon and Braden Wain. Unfortunately, the match took its toll as far as injuries were concerned serving up the potential for costly repercussions heading into the deciding match. Under a blazing sun, the intense heat continued to rein heavy on the team as they geared up for their final game against the NSD Impact out of Calgary . Despite being short 4 players due to the numerous injuries in the previous Renegades match, and with the effects of heat exhaustion beginning to take its toll, the players were not discouraged and remained focused on achieving the positive result they were looking for. At the halfway mark, the boys were down 3-1, but as a result of dogged perseverance and an unwavering determination, managed to miraculously come from behind with 3 unanswered goals to steal a 4-3 win and along with it…the ultimate prize. GOLD! In the final match, Cole Smith and Brendan Woytowich tallied for one goal a piece and Shina Olatonade struck for two to bring his total to 3 throughout the entire tournament. All the boys along with Larry and his Coaching Staff should be congratulated for their commitment and determination to never quit and a special THANK YOU goes out to all the parents, grandparents and family members that sat through the scorching heat to cheer and support our boys!!! Awesome job Warriors!!!
